How the size is calculated
Printable width is paper width minus the left and right margins. Height uses the top and bottom margins, and excludes the removable 5 mm band if printed labels are enabled.
Finished width = columns × printable width − (columns − 1) × overlap. Height uses the same rule for rows.
Example: four A4 sheets
With 5 mm margins, 10 mm overlap and printed labels off, a 2 × 2 portrait layout covers 39.0 × 56.4 cm. Exact mode keeps the requested canvas and leaves any excess on the last row or column blank.
Can a different orientation save paper?
Try both orientations with the same exact dimensions, margins and overlap. The count depends on those assumptions, rather than always being lower in landscape.
